What is the right to information?
The Right to Information Act 2009 (the RTI Act) is Queensland legislation designed to give a right of access to information in the government’s possession or under the government’s control unless, on balance, it is contrary to the public interest to give the access (section 3).
As a statutory authority, QUT must comply with the provisions of the RTI Act.
Your legal rights under the RTI Act
The RTI Act provides individuals with the legal right to request access to non-personal documents held by QUT and to appeal if dissatisfied with the University's response to this request.
Administration of RTI at QUT
The University's responsibilities under the RTI Act are administered by the RTI Officer, based in Governance and Legal Services.
Information held by QUT
QUT produces a QUT Publication Scheme, which describes the University's governance, services, finances, priorities, decision-making processes, policies and public registers.
Access to information outside of RTI process
It is QUT’s intention to provide access to non-personal information outside of the RTI process where possible. To support this intention, the University publishes a great deal of information about itself and its operations and activities on the QUT Website. Details can be found in the QUT Publication Scheme.
Making an RTI application to QUT
An RTI request should be made on the Application for Access to Information at QUT form and be accompanied by the relevant application fee of $39. There may be processing and access charges for an application.
Please provide as much information as you can to enable identification of the documents of interest to you.
Applications can be sent to:
Right to Information Officer
Governance and Legal Services, Gardens Point Campus
Queensland University of Technology
GPO Box 2434
Brisbane Qld 4001
On receiving your application, the University will consult with you, if necessary, about any difficulties in dealing with your request.
QUT will give you access within 25 business days to the requested documents or give you specific written reasons for refusing access. If the University must consult with a third party before releasing the documents, the University has 35 business days to respond to your request.
Disclosure Log (Information released)
The disclosure log provides details of non-personal information released under the Right to Information Act 2009 considered to be of significant interest to the wider public.
