The following is a list of legislation relating to recordkeeping in Queensland:
Public Records Act 2002
The Public Records Act (QLD) 2002 provides a framework for the creation, management, preservation and use of public records and access to public records as per principles of the Freedom of Information Act 1992. Public authorities must maintain full and accurate records, undertake disposal in accordance with disposal requirements as stated by the State Archivist and provide access to public records.
Evidence Act 1977
Refers to production of documents by public authorities in relation to civil proceedings.
Electronic Transactions Act 2001
The object of the Act is to provide a framework that facilitates the use of electronic transactions, promotes confidence in the use of electronic transactions and enables business and the community to use electronic communication with the government.
Financial Administration & Audit Act 1997
Refers to records related to financial information.
Information Standard 40 – Recordkeeping
Assists agencies to meet obligations under the Public Records Act 2002. The standard sets out a number of principles for record keeping:
- Compliance and accountability
- Design, implementation and management
- Making, keeping, accessing and preserving full and accurate records

Assists agencies to meet obligations under the Public Records Act 2002. The standard sets out a number of principles for managing records that require a technical device or machine for creation, storage and access
Information Standard 31 - Retention & Disposal of Public Records
Outlines the principles and strategies for the retention and disposal of government records.
AS ISO 15489: Information & Documentation: Records Management
Provides a framework for recordkeeping and a benchmark that organisations can use to assess their recordkeeping systems. The standard is designed to help organisations create, capture and manage full and accurate records.
